October 2025 Review
Background: The markets wobbled a little in October before recovering. Concerns about a mounting trade war between the US and China dominated the news. China threatened to restrict the export of rare earth metals. The US, despite its best efforts, is a long way off from reducing its dependence on rare earths from China. In any case, Trump and Xi reached a compromise. The broad details included China agreeing to buy US soybeans and reducing its restrictions on the export of

International Petroleum Corp: Q3 Results - One-liner: “Blackrod early = bigger, sooner cash; buybacks + hedges = downside protected upside.”
International Petroleum (TSX: IPCO, Market Cap C$2.5bn (£1.35bn). Share price C$22.70 (1229p). 4.7% of JIC Portfolio). (In the portfolio view in my Investment Diary, I show the share price converted to sterling). Weekend Update: Are we set up for a great last two months of 2025? I think so.
Admittedly, it's only four prior instances! The Federal Reserve cut interest rates. Will the Bank of England next Thursday? The JIC Portfolio was up 0.2% last week, while the FTSE All-Share was up 0.5%. YTD, JIC Portfolio is up +19.6%, All-Share +20.9%. The Funds' Portfolio was down 0.6% last week, while the FTSE All-World (GBP) was up 1.7%. YTD, Funds' Portfolio is up +25.2%, All-World (GBP) +16.0%. Coinbase Global: Q3 Results
Coinbase Global (COIN; NASDAQ. Market capitalisation: $88.4bn, $329, 2.0% of JIC Portfolio. www.coinbase.com/en-gb/about Conclusion: I didn't buy the shares for a short-term reaction to a quarterly trading update. I bought due to the structural changes occurring in financial markets, to which Coinbase is integral. Having said that, it's good to see it had a robust Q3. Happy Holder! What better way than to ask Grok to summarise the main points and the analysts' reaction? Key

NGEX: Hargreaves Lansdown now showing NGEX shares. Not only that, HL and Interactive Investors are showing LunR shareholding. It's worth having a glance at the new LunR website
www.lunrroyalties.com/#lunr-shareholders It is good to see my NGEX shares being valued in my HL SIPP. Almost as good is to see the LunR shares also showing. They are valued at zero as the shares are not yet listed. I understand it might be six weeks before that occurs. It will be fascinating to see what they are valued at. How much of a "Lundin" premium will be built into the share price by the market? We will have to wait and see. In the meantime, the website gives a clue a

NGEX Minerals: Drilling commences and my frustration with HL
NGEx Minerals (TSX: NGEX, Market Cap: C$4.9bn (£2.7bn), C$22.3 (1239p); currently 7.7% of JIC Portfolio). (In the portfolio view in my Investment Diary, I show the share price converted to sterling) www.lundingroup.com www.ngexminerals.com Conclusion: The share price fell more than 10% on Monday. I guess that some investors who had bought to get more LunR shares ahead of the cutoff date sold some of their NGEX shares when they had effectively gone ex-the spinoff. Anyway, th

Two Trades: Increased XTrackers Artificial Intelligence & Big Data ETF in both portfolios
Xtrackers Artificial Intelligence & Big Data ETF (XAIX) I have increased my exposure in both portfolios to 7.5%. As I said in my last post, " I can't help feeling that we are building up to a strong run in global equities into the year-end. A continuation of what we have seen in the last week. U.S. interest rates are on the way down, and Trump seems to be signing trade deals left, right and centre. An agreement with China, whatever that means, will be welcomed by markets." I

Weekend Update - Another volatile week (but ultimately up)
Some relief on the inflation front on both sides of the Atlantic. In the UK, September inflation was 3.8%. No change from the previous month, but better than the 4.0% forecasts. In the US, inflation was 0.1% less than forecast. Gold's Tuesday wobble did not help my two portfolios. The JIC Portfolio was up 2.5% last week, while the FTSE All-Share was up 3.2%. YTD, JIC Portfolio is up +19.3%, All-Share +20.3%. The Funds' Portfolio was down 0.2% last week, while the FTSE All-Wor

Just got off the phone with Mr Hindsight!
Gold and gold miners had a terrible day yesterday, giving up much of the gains of the last few weeks. Mr Hindsight tells me I should have sold my positions on Monday. I can't argue with that. For what it's worth, I think this is a "shakeout" within a bull market. There was a lot of profit to be booked, and it seems that the run-up over the last few weeks sucked in a lot of new speculators, some probably using leverage. Once the price starts to fall, it does not take much to

I'm switching provider!
Recently, I transferred my ISA from HL to Interactive Investor. The switch went well and I'm happy with Interactive Investor's service. I have now initiated the transfer of my SIPP. Two reasons: First, I was becoming increasingly frustrated that HL would not allow me to trade some stocks that I wanted to. HL stipulates that they must settle on Crest. Frontline is just such an example. I can't trade it on HL, but I can on II. Second, costs. I will save a not inconsiderable amo
